"Is this really just for 7-14-year-olds? It feels like pure creativity for anyone aged 7-50!"
Omnia Interactive developed an innovative interactive sandpit for the National Railway Museum in York, designed to educate visitors about the engineering challenges of railway construction. This exhibit demonstrates how landscapes—such as extreme elevations, bodies of water, and bridges—affect railway development, offering an engaging, hands-on learning experience.
The exhibit utilizes an IR depth camera to track the height of the sand in real time as users dig, move, and reshape it. This depth data is processed in Unreal Engine to generate a dynamic 3D terrain that visually transforms the sandpit as the shifting terrain is projected over the sand. The system also applies material effects based on elevation, simulating snow on high peaks and water in lower areas to enhance realism and interactivity.
